Epidemiology of Respiratory Viral Infections at a Combined Influenza and COVID-19 Outpatient Clinic: A Four-Month Cross-Sectional Analysis of Rapid Antigen and RT-PCR Swab Surveillance
Background. Combined influenza/COVID-19 outpatient clinics generate large volumes of respiratory swab data that can inform local pathogen surveillance. We described the burden, distribution, and temporal trend of respiratory viral detections in such a clinic over four consecutive months. Methods. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional analysis of 1381 respiratory swab episodes recorded between January and April. Swabs were tested by rapid antigen assay, RT-PCR, or both, for SARS-CoV-2, influenza A, influenza B and RSV. Positivity was summarized with 95% Wilson confidence intervals (CI); associations were assessed using the χ2 and Fisher exact tests, and the monthly trend with the Cochran–Armitage test. Results.
