Current Perspectives on Antigen Testing in Respiratory Infections

Respiratory tract infections (RTIs) are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early accurate diagnosis of RTIs results in decreased antimicrobial prescription, shorter hospitalizations and reduced healthcare costs.1 Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are characterized by rapid turnaround, ease of use and cost-effective diagnostic performance characteristics.1,2 This article aims to provide an overview of the role and the diagnostic accuracy of RATs in patients with RTIs.
