A rapid rise in world population and an increased demand for cheaper animal origin protein have transformed the animal production systems into industrial-scale operations. These large-scale animal production units achieve optimal efficiency in production. In these large-scale animal units, workers spend up to eight hours working in the confined facilities with exposures to several contaminants, including organic dust (OD), gases and odorant compounds. Exposure to OD in agricultural settings is central to many of the health effects observed in workers. Workers typically report respiratory (bronchitis, asthma-like symptoms, chest tightness) and other symptoms including annual decline in their lung function.
