Pandemisation of the Border: A Lens on Polish – German Rebordering Processes During and After COVID-19

The article proposes a lens that helps explain the dynamics and effects of contemporary bordering processes at the Polish-German border, often seen as a laboratory of European integration. Pandemic border closures are interpreted not as a temporary disruption of debordering, but as an articulation and reinforcement of an ongoing rebordering cycle, complementing frameworks that have so far dominated the literature. Four components of pandemisation are conceptualised: pandemic closures as a continuation of the EU border crisis; the nationalisation of the border; borderity (different potentials for crossing borders for different categories of residents); and internal mobility and borders (cocooning).
