Introduction Global air travel plays a central role in the rapid international spread of infectious diseases, including SARS-CoV-2. While individual passenger testing has been widely used to monitor viral importation, it is resource-intensive and may miss asymptomatic cases. Aircraft wastewater surveillance has emerged as a non-invasive, scalable alternative for monitoring pathogen circulation among travelers. In this study, we evaluated the ability of aircraft wastewater to reflect SARS-CoV-2 variant distributions among passengers under real-world conditions.
